The Top 10 Pirated Movies of 2022 is now finally revealed thanks to recent research findings from MUSO. The list is heavily dominated with superhero spectacles from both DC and Marvel.
Top 10 Pirated Movies of 2022
According to MUSO, the top 10 pirated movies of 2022 are given below, from most to least –
- Spider-Man: No Way Home
- The Batman
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
- Thor: Love and Thunder
- Black Adam
- Uncharted
- Eternals
- Top Gun: Maverick
- Jurassic World Dominion
- Encanto
As seen above, the research shows that superhero movies dominated illegal viewing in 2022, with DC and Marvel releases accounting for 70% of piracy demand (illegal streams, downloads) for the top 10 most pirated movie releases of the year. Despite its October debut, DC’s “Black Adam” alone received a 9% share.
Spider-Man: No Way Home saw an increase in online piracy 90 days after it was released. This is due to the movie having released in video-on-demand 88 days after its theatrical release.
This data shades light on the fact that online piracy increases when better quality content is available for piracy. Most of the time when a movie is released theatrically pirates tend to share a low quality ‘cam-rip’ version which is not popular with the audience.
These ‘cam-rip’ versions, according to a Muso analyst, “often provide an unsatisfactory viewing experience and can drive frustrated consumers into theaters for a better experience.”
Due to covid the theatrical window has shortened which means high quality versions of movies appear sooner in video-on-demand or in streaming services. This causes pirates getting hands on higher quality versions of the movies faster.
The Batman, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Adam had 45 days, 47 days and 32 days of theatrical release window which is less than 2 months. While Thor: Love and Thunder had 62 days. This helped the movies having a higher rate of piracy.
On the other hand Top Gun: Maverick had a full 3 months theatrical release window of 88 days. After that it was available on video-on-demand. This helped reduce the movie’s piracy and rank it lower in the list.
