Online piracy is on the rise again and the United States is in the lead as cited by the Motion Picture Association (MPA). At least $29 billion in revenue is lost each year due to online piracy as well as 230,000 to 560,000 Jobs Lost.

Visits to online piracy sites rising

The number of visits to piracy sites has increased by more than 20%. This rapid increase comes after the covid lockdowns are over. During the first 8 months of 2022, 141.7 Billion people have visited online piracy sites. Out of this 141.7 Billion visits TV-related content and film piracy has increased most as given below.

  • TV-related content 47% 
  • The publishing category 28%
  • Film 12%
  • Music 7%
  • Software 6%

We are seeing that TV-related content piracy is now being dominated by streaming piracy, which consists of 95% of the traffic in this category. 

Streaming sites are also contributing to film piracy with 55% visits. Download sites are close (45%) to it as well.

The United States of America still remains the country with most pirated site visits. Russia, India and China being 3 of the biggest countries of the world, takes 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.
