Case Study: INE

How Onsist helped INE remove pirated content

Introduction to the Case:

INE is the premier provider of technical training for the IT industry. INE is revolutionizing the digital learning industry through the implementation of adaptive technologies and a proven method of hands-on training experiences. INE’s portfolio of training and tutorial content is built for levels of technical learning, specializing in advanced networking technologies, next generation security and infrastructure programming and development.

INE’s mission is to be your trusted partner in reaching your professional goals. INE has cultivated innovative content and teaching methods, delivered through cutting edge technology and issued by the most esteemed instructors in the world. Over the past 14 years, INE has helped tens of thousands of IT professionals achieve their goals and countless Fortune 500 companies build a world class technical organization fully prepared for tomorrow’s challenges.

As INE regularly cultivates innovative content and teaching methods, it fell prey to online piracy. Their technical training videos were being pirated online on various piracy websites including cyber lockers, tube sites and social media.

When INE reached Onsist to take down its pirated content from the internet, we sat down and tried to find out where and how most of their contents were being pirated.

INE's Official Platforms:

These are the official (social) channels of INE.

The Solution:

Step 1: We researched keywords related to INE’s courses.

Step 2: Using those keywords, we searched for illegal courses on sites that have previously harbored illegal course or training materials based on Onsist’s earlier experience in dealing with e-learning piracy and online course piracy.

Step 3: Onsist also did Google searches related to INE’s courses, which resulted in several websites that harbored illegal shared copies of INE’s content.

Step 4: Tools were used to save copyrighting infringing websites, as well as the keywords used to find them. A weekly routine checkup is done with existing and new keywords to find new infringements.

Step 5: In the end, it is always ensured that the illegal search results found in Google are removed from their search index, and that copyright infringing downloads, videos and listings are being taken down.

Step 6: After the regular routine checkup, Onsist researches new keywords monthly, as INE continues creating updated content, and makes sure that pirated courses are taken down swiftly.

Research Findings:

As we can see by looking at the results highlighted in the above paragraph and graph, most illegal content we found and removed for INE have been illegal downloads and Google search results.

In fact, 72% of the total amount of illegal content found are illegal downloads (8652 downloads at the time of writing). These have been found by using a combination of man and machine.

The machine section of our work is done by our automated monitoring system and scraper. These machines crawl a database of known piracy sites and grab content relating to INE. These results will then be reported as soon as possible.

The manual work is done by one of our OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence) trained specialists. They manually search through forums, search engines and file-sharing sites using advanced search operators, key phrases and other techniques. They can find content an automated search engine does not pick up.

Onsist has also been able to remove more than 3000 illegal Google search results that lead to sites illegally offering INE’s content. This resulted in much cleaner search results, leaving online pirates empty handed.

The Challenges:

Whilst working on INE’s case, we are faced with continuous challenges that require our specialist to constantly learn and adapt.

Some copyright infringing parties might not remove illegal content at first. These sites will need more work and a different approach. This is where our specialists thrive.

They’re constantly looking for a way to get the unremovable removed, or to isolate and hide so that no living soul can ever find that illegal copy again.
